Ubisoft’s latest installment in the acclaimed Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, launched on March 20 to overwhelmingly positive reception from both critics and players. The game, set in feudal Japan during the Sengoku period, has been praised as a return to form for the series.

Shadows introduces innovative dual-protagonist gameplay, allowing players to switch between Naoe, a skilled shinobi from Iga Province, and Yasuke, a historical African samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga. Each character offers distinct playstyles and perspectives on the unfolding narrative.

Early reviews highlight the game’s meticulous attention to historical detail and its refined stealth mechanics. The recreation of 16th-century Japan has been described as breathtaking, with dynamic seasons affecting both gameplay and visual presentation.

“This is the Assassin’s Creed game fans have been waiting for,” wrote Gamespot in their 9/10 review. “The stealth systems feel fresh and meaningful, while the combat retains the depth introduced in recent entries.”

The game has already achieved impressive player numbers on Steam, peaking at over 120,000 concurrent players during its launch weekend. Pre-order figures suggest the game is on track to become one of the best-selling entries in franchise history.

Ubisoft has announced a comprehensive post-launch content roadmap, including two major expansions and free seasonal updates. The strong launch provides a much-needed boost for the publisher following several challenging quarters.
