Epic Games, the creator of the massively popular game Fortnite, announced on March 24th that it would be cutting over 1,000 jobs, citing a downturn in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025 and a broader industry slowdown. CEO Tim Sweeney stated that the company was “spending significantly more than we’re making” and that major cuts were necessary for funding future initiatives.
This significant workforce reduction follows previous layoffs by Epic Games in September 2023 and highlights the ongoing challenges facing the video game industry. The layoffs are part of a broader trend of economic uncertainties affecting the sector, with slower growth, weaker consumer spending, and tougher cost economics forcing companies to restructure.
March 2026 has been a busy month for game releases across various platforms. Early in the month, players saw the release of World of Warcraft: Midnight and Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon. Pokémon Pokopia launched for the Switch 2 on March 5th, alongside Planet of Lana 2: Children of the Leaf for multiple platforms.
Mid-March brought Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake on March 12th, followed by WWE 2K26 and MLB The Show 26 on March 13th. The open-world RPG Crimson Desert launched on March 19th for PC, Xbox Series, and PS5. The month continues with Life is Strange: Reunion and the Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection both launching on March 26th.
The industry also hosted significant events this month, including the GDC Festival of Gaming 2026 in San Francisco from March 9th to 13th, bringing together developers, publishers, and investors. PAX East 2026 is scheduled from March 26th to 29th, offering fans hands-on experiences with upcoming titles.
Crystal Dynamics, known for the Tomb Raider series, also laid off 20 more employees as part of a review of its team structures, though the studio assured that its two Tomb Raider games in development remain on track. An ongoing legal battle concerning the reinstatement of Subnautica 2’s CEO adds to the industry’s challenges.
As the gaming industry navigates these difficult times, companies are focusing on sustainable business models while continuing to deliver innovative experiences to players worldwide.
