The war between Israel and Iran has entered a critical phase as military operations intensify across the Middle East region. On March 28, 2026, Israel conducted significant strikes on Iranian facilities, including missile and naval mine production sites, as well as a yellowcake production facility in Ardakan, Yazd province. Residents in Tehran reported hearing approximately ten intense explosions and witnessing plumes of black smoke rising from targeted areas.
The conflict has expanded beyond bilateral engagements, with Iranian-backed Houthi rebels launching attacks from Yemen. Israel reported intercepting its first incoming missile from Yemen, marking a concerning escalation in the regional conflict. In response to growing security threats, Qatar has urged its residents to remain indoors due to elevated security risk levels.
Iran’s military response has targeted multiple countries in the region. An Iranian missile struck the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia, wounding twelve American servicemembers and damaging U.S. refueling aircraft. Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry confirmed intercepting and destroying three drones over Riyadh and the Eastern Province. Kuwait also reported that the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port was targeted in a combined drone and cruise missile attack.
The humanitarian toll continues to mount, particularly in Lebanon where Israeli attacks have resulted in twenty-six deaths and eighty-six injuries in the past twenty-four hours. Since March 2, total casualties in Lebanon have reached 1,142 dead and 3,315 injured. An Israeli airstrike on Kfar Rumman in southern Lebanon killed two people and injured eight others.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict remain ongoing but face significant challenges. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that American military operations against Iran are expected to conclude “in a matter of weeks, not months.” President Donald Trump has expressed desire for a peace deal, though Iran’s foreign minister maintains that no negotiations are taking place with what Tehran considers the “enemy.” Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz has publicly questioned the effectiveness of the U.S. and Israeli military campaign.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, remains a focal point of international concern. The British foreign secretary has condemned Iran for blocking the strait, while the United Nations has established a task force to address humanitarian consequences of trade disruptions. Indonesia is coordinating with Iranian authorities to ensure safe passage of its vessels through these contested waters.
