Nintendo has announced that pre-orders for the upcoming Switch 2 console have shattered company records, with more units reserved in the first week than any previous Nintendo hardware launch. The highly anticipated successor to the original Switch is scheduled for release in June.
The new console features significantly upgraded hardware including a larger OLED display, improved battery life, and support for 4K resolution when docked. Backward compatibility with existing Switch games was confirmed, addressing a major concern among current owners.
“The response has exceeded even our most optimistic projections,” said Nintendo’s president during the announcement. “Gamers are clearly excited about the enhanced capabilities while appreciating that their existing game libraries will transfer seamlessly.”
Several major game releases were announced alongside the console, including new entries in the Mario Kart and Legend of Zelda franchises optimized for the new hardware. Third-party publishers also confirmed robust support with enhanced versions of popular titles.
Industry analysts estimate the Switch 2 could sell over 20 million units in its first year, potentially making it the fastest-selling gaming console in history. The original Switch has sold more than 140 million units since its 2017 launch.
