The US Congress has passed significant healthcare policy updates in April 2026, most notably extending Medicare telehealth coverage through 2027 while preserving rural payment protections and advancing prior authorization reforms.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has finalized a rule eliminating fax machines and paper-based claims processes, mandating standardized electronic transactions and digital signatures instead. This change is projected to save the healthcare industry $781 million annually.

Google announced a partnership with CMS allowing patients to securely access and store medical records directly within the Fitbit app, aiming to reduce fragmentation across providers and integrate clinical data with wearable health monitoring.

In AI healthcare innovation, Epic’s clinical AI tool “Art” has reduced documentation time by 32% and improved early lung cancer detection rates from 46% to 69%. CVS Health is exploring “AI digital twins” to simulate patient behavior and optimize care delivery.

Additionally, a $50 billion federal Rural Health Transformation Program will expand telehealth access across rural communities, while AI prescription platform Doctronic raised $40 million as the first US AI authorized to legally renew prescriptions.
