Iran’s chief negotiator announced on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz cannot be opened due to what he described as “blatant violations of the ceasefire” by the United States and Israel. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that these violations include the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, which he characterized as taking the global economy “hostage.”

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas passing through this narrow waterway. In 2025, about 20 million barrels of oil transited the strait daily, representing nearly $600 billion in annual energy trade.

President Masoud Pezeshkian indicated that Iran remains open to negotiations, but emphasized that “breach of commitments, blockade and threats are main obstacles to genuine negotiations.” The situation has escalated following reports of attacks on cargo ships in the strait, with Iran announcing the seizure of two vessels for “inspection.”

The White House responded by stating that President Trump is “satisfied” with the ongoing naval blockade and understands that “Iran is in a very weak position.” Vice-President JD Vance, who was scheduled to lead US delegation talks in Pakistan, remains in the United States as diplomatic efforts stall.
