KYOTO – Nintendo announced Monday that its Switch 2 console has sold over 10 million units globally in its first week, shattering all previous gaming hardware launch records and cementing its position as the most successful console debut in history.

The hybrid device, which launched April 20th at $449, features an 8-inch OLED display, 4K output when docked, and backward compatibility with the original Switchs massive library of over 5,000 games.

We are overwhelmed by the response from gamers worldwide, said Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa. The Switch 2 represents the culmination of everything we have learned about creating unique gaming experiences.

Launch title Mario Kart World has already sold 8 million copies, becoming the fastest-selling Nintendo game ever. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Tomorrow and Metroid Prime 4 are scheduled for release next month.

Analysts had predicted strong sales, but the actual numbers exceeded even the most optimistic projections. Competitors Sony and Microsoft have both announced they will accelerate their next-generation console roadmaps in response.

The Switch 2s innovative magnetic Joy-Cons and AI-enhanced upscaling technology have received particular praise from reviewers.
